Bioethics researcher reflects on artificial intelligence at UACJ academic forum

Dr. María Elizabeth de los Ríos addressed the ethical challenges posed by artificial intelligence in the healthcare sector, emphasizing the importance of always safeguarding human dignity.

Dr. María Elizabeth de los Ríos Uriarte, professor and researcher at the School of Bioethics at Anáhuac University Mexico, participated as a speaker in the forum "UACJ: AI in the academic field" organized by the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez (UACJ) held from August 20 to 22, 2025, in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua.

During her lecture entitled “Bioethical Considerations Regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Field of Health Sciences,” she reflected on the ethical challenges posed by the application of artificial intelligence in the health sector, emphasizing the importance of always safeguarding the dignity of the human person.

In her presentation, she addressed the rapid development of artificial intelligence in various areas of human life, with particular attention to medicine, and noted that while AI promises great benefits, it also poses significant ethical and bioethical challenges. Among these, she highlighted its incorporation into the doctor-patient relationship and its implications, the emergence of discriminatory algorithmic biases, the inaccessibility of healthcare services and treatments due to their high cost, and the lack of clarity in the attribution of responsibilities.

Dr. de los Ríos emphasized that the key to using artificial intelligence safely is always putting people at the center and remembering that technology should be a tool, never an end.

It should be noted that the forum brought together national and international specialists from various disciplines to discuss the uses, scope, and limitations of artificial intelligence in education and research.

Anáhuac University Mexico congratulates Dr. de los Ríos Uriarte for her participation in this high-level academic event, which reaffirms her commitment to cutting-edge research, applied ethics, and the construction of a more humane and supportive society.
