"Bioethical Gatherings"

During this event organized by the Catholic University of Argentina, the Research Coordinator of our Faculty of Bioethics gave a presentation on contemporary challenges in Global Bioethics within the framework of industry 4.0.

On April 12, 2023, the first session of the Bioethics Gatherings was held, which were organized by the Institute of Bioethics of the Catholic University of Argentina, an activity that will be carried out monthly and consists of the presentation of a topic by part of an expert and the debate of the ideas presented, both in virtual and face-to-face format.

Dr. Marieli de los Ríos Uriarte, Research Coordinator of our Faculty of Bioethics, participated as a speaker in the first session with the presentation "Global Bioethics Challenges facing industry 4.0", with the aim that the audience Get to know and recognize the role of global Bioethics in the area of industry 4.0, as well as the innovation and risks that it represents.

Throughout her presentation, she analyzed the concepts of what "global" means, the orientation towards the future of Global Bioethics, its interdisciplinarity, the challenges it presents in the face of industry 4.0, such as the anthropological one, which seeks to recover the centrality of the person as an interconnected reality and the challenge presented by the ethics of digitization.

Secondly, she spoke about the ethical challenge of justice that seeks to reduce social gaps due to inequitable access to health, education and food, from a subsidiarity level; thirdly, on the environmental challenge that promotes sustainability processes through the transformation and use of ecological resources, clean energy; and fourthly, she raised the economic and political challenge that seeks to establish the resignification of the "common good", promote global governance for international collaboration, and generate solidarity economies that contribute to strengthening global solidarity.

She finished her participation by concluding that industry 4.0 represents a paradigm shift that entails great opportunities and serious risks but, nevertheless, goes hand in hand with Bioethics. This, being global, will contribute to healing inequalities and reducing gaps, strengthening at the same time caring for the environment and recovering the centrality of people, always in search of the common good.

After her presentation, Dr. de los Ríos participated in a debate of ideas with the audience, both in person and online, in which she reflected on key points, such as digital processes and coalitions to establish regulations and ethical limits to technological advances, in order to guide them towards a permanent service to the person.

It should be noted that our Faculty has Global Bioethics as one of its lines of research and the link achieved with this presentation between this topic and the emergence of industry 4.0 technologies highlights the effort to carry out an ethical reflection on the field of scientific advances, so that they can serve the human person and society.

We have a Master's Degree in Global Bioethics, which allows us to study these issues in greater depth.
