Gustavo Pérez Berlanga presents his book "Food as a Theme of Bioethical Discourse"

Food as a Theme of Bioethical Discourse

In this work, the graduate of the PhD in Applied Bioethics offers an ethical reflection on the challenges of the current food system and points out the misinformation to which consumers are exposed.

On April 29, 2025, Anáhuac University Mexico hosted the presentation of the book "Food as a Theme of Bioethical Discourse" by Dr. Gustavo Pérez Berlanga, a graduate of the Doctorate in Applied Bioethics taught by the School of Bioethics at Anáhuac University Mexico.

This event also featured the presence of Dr. María Elizabeth de los Ríos, a researcher at the School of Bioethics; Dr. Guillermina Baena Paz; and Dr. Enrique Guadarrama, both professors at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), who highlighted the relevance and timeliness of the work, especially at a time when public health and the way we eat are increasingly intertwined.

In this publication, Dr. Pérez Berlanga critically analyzes the problems plaguing the contemporary food system. He highlights the misinformation to which consumers are exposed, the lack of education on nutrition and health, the primacy of economic interests in the food industry, and the lack of government regulation. He also highlights the circulation of false or unreliable information through social media and mass media.

Given this situation, the author proposes a reconfiguration of food discourse, based on the fundamental principles of bioethics, such as respect for human dignity, justice, and responsibility for the environment. From this perspective, he argues that it is possible to transform the food system to ensure adequate, healthy, and sustainable nutrition for all.

He also emphasized the real health risks associated with the daily consumption of certain products, which can contribute to the development of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and certain types of cancer. He also stressed that "eating is not only a necessity, it is also an ethical act." Under this premise, he invited attendees to rethink how we view food, not just as a consumer product, but as a human right that must be protected, since it directly affects people's health.

The Anáhuac Community congratulates Dr. Pérez Berlanga and the contributing authors for this valuable publication, which offers a profound ethical reflection on one of the most pressing issues of our time.
