During the visit, lines of academic collaboration were explored with the goal of promoting humane and ethically committed medical care in Latin America.
On May 7, 2025, Dr. José Alberto Castilla Barajas, director of the School of Bioethics at Anáhuac University Mexico, accompanied by Father Fernando Fabó Martín, LC, made an official visit to the Porta Vitae Medical Foundation located in Santiago, Chile, with the purpose of strengthening institutional ties and promoting possible lines of collaboration in the field of bioethics and medical care centered on human dignity.
It should be noted that this activity is part of the School of Bioethics' academic internationalization strategy aimed at establishing alliances with institutions committed to ethical training in health at the regional and international levels.
During his stay, Dr. Castilla held a fruitful meeting with Dr. Sergio Valenzuela, a specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics, a professor at the University of Chile and widely recognized for his work promoting person-centered medicine, respect for life, and the promotion of professional ethics based on Christian values. The dialogue between the two experts addressed the contemporary challenges faced by healthcare professionals in their clinical and ethical decisions, as well as the need to consolidate spaces for training, reflection, and advocacy in this field.
Among the points of convergence identified are the shared interest in training leaders in bioethics who integrate technical knowledge, ethical judgment, and human sensitivity, the promotion of medical care that prioritizes the comprehensive well-being of the patient, and the development of projects that articulate research, teaching, and social commitment. Both institutions agreed on the urgent need to provide healthcare professionals with tools that allow them to address complex bioethical dilemmas from scientific, ethical, and humanistic perspectives.
As a result of the meeting, mutual interest was expressed in establishing an academic collaboration agreement in the near future. This agreement will seek to open joint spaces for training, the exchange of experiences, the organization of seminars, participation in medical missions, and the development of projects related to applied ethics in clinical contexts. It is seen as a strategic opportunity to integrate students, faculty, and researchers into initiatives that promote a culture of ethical care for life in Latin America.
The visit of Dr. Castilla Barajas and Father Fernando Fabó to the Porta Vitae Medical Foundation reaffirms the commitment of the School of Bioethics at Anáhuac University Mexico to building Ibero-American networks dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary, academically rigorous, and socially committed bioethics. At the same time, it consolidates the university's role as a benchmark in the training of professionals capable of transforming society from an ethical, medical, and deeply humanistic perspective.
