Bioethics graduates share their experience in the webinar "What does a Bioethicist do?"

What does a Bioethicist do?

During their participation, three experts reported the application of the knowledge of bioethics in their daily and work life.

Last Tuesday, March 1 of this year, the master’s degree in Bioethics (face-to-face mode and online mode) carried out the Webinar: What does a bioethicist do? where we had the pleasure of having as guests and creating a space for dialogue with the following graduates of our Faculty of Bioethics.

- Prof. Noemí Sirena: Biologist from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, doctoral student in Bioethics from the Universidad Anáhuac Mexico, adjudicator at the Federal Commission for the Prevention of Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS).

- Dr. Germán Carreto: Surgeon, with a specialty in Gynecology and Obstetrics and a medical subspecialty in Maternal-Fetal Medicine (high-risk pregnancy), with postgraduate studies in specialty, Master’s, and Doctorate in Bioethics from the Universidad Anáhuac México. General Director and founding partner of the Center for Female and Perinatal Diagnosis (Clinic PREGNAFEM).

- Prof. Ariana González Barrere: Master in Bioethics from the Universidad Anáhuac Online, specialist in Genetics and Molecular Biology for genomic diagnosis in Héritas, Argentina.

During this session, Dr. Elvira Llaca, coordinator of the Master's in Bioethics face-to-face, and Prof. Patricia Hernández, coordinator of the Master's in Bioethical Studies online, were in charge of welcoming all attendees and moderating the session by asking questions, such as: What is Bioethics? What character has bioethics given to your life, both personally and at work? What dilemmas have they faced? What tools has bioethics given you?, among others

The Prof. Noemí Sirena began by telling us about her experience in bioethics, mentioning that for her, bioethics is "the perfect conjunction between philosophy, ethics, law and health sciences, where concepts are applied for the benefit of living beings". She added that by learning more about bioethics and dedicating herself to health regulation, where she evaluates the entire process of products intended for human consumption, she discovered that there is an interdisciplinary bridge between the social sciences and the exact sciences for the protection and care of living beings.

She stressed that the doctorate has been a watershed in bioethical reasoning in his professional career and her life, so she has a much more open vision and humanistic and ethical knowledge that help her always find the key points where bioethics is integrated.

Later, Dr. Germán Carreto began by expressing his passion for bioethics "When they ask me, what is bioethics? I always tell them that it is a lifestyle, you have to be consistent with what you have studied, what he thinks and what he does”, he explained to us that there is a before and after, since with his knowledge we really recognize the dilemmas of life and the perspective on health changes. He emphasized the importance of transdisciplinarity, since there are many points of view that converge for the patient or person who are involved. Regarding the character that bioethics has given him in his teaching practice, he expressed that today he focuses more on providing the context of bioethical knowledge, since the information is found in books and anyone can read: “the real challenge is to make a situation tangible, as this gives students an idea of where they can apply it.”

Regarding postgraduate studies, he comments that one of the tools that bioethics has given him in conjunction with philosophy is the fact of understanding the underlying problems, learning to find a way to solve them and always respecting the autonomy of the patient. He also mentioned that research is very important to him because it provides utility to society, turning knowledge into a life commitment to the other.

Finally, the Prof. Ariana González, pointed out that "bioethics is everything that is within a process and within an action that if you stop to break it down, it is difficult to explain it." Like the previous speakers, she agreed that bioethics is an interdisciplinary work, which does not exceed, nor is it alien to anyone. Working in a laboratory, she explained that decision-making influences any act related to health sciences, from informed consent to the delivery of the report to the patient, since in this process conflicts or dilemmas may arise due to the management of information. SHe stressed that it is necessary to be available to patients and provide adequate information to ensure adequate respect for their autonomy.

By way of conclusion, Dr. Patricia and Dr. Elvira stressed the importance of teamwork in bioethics and offered some encouraging words, thanking the great work that everyone does every day and acknowledging how bioethics has paid everyone's lives.
