Case of Puerperal Sepsis Associated With Hemostatic Surgicel

Abstract

A 32-year-old woman following 6th-day postcesarean section that had uterine atony and was treated with a B-lynch suture technique and hemostatic device applied in hysterotomy (Fig. 1). Following the procedure, she had fever, abdominal pain, high levels of procalcitonin (0.30 mg/mL), and white blood cells (14,000 cells/µl). A CT scan identified an abdominal abscess at the surgical site, with a decision for laparoscopy. During the procedure, an infected Surgicel with the B-Lynch suture still in place was found (Fig. 2). The Surgicel was removed, and two Blake drains were left. The patient made a full recovery within five days and was subsequently discharged
