Spirituality as the basis and foundation of the medical profession (CAPÍTULO)

Abstract
What is the essence of the medical profession? COVID 19 pandemic has raised this question, human frailty has confronted us -in some senses- with a forgotten reality. Comprehending who we are will allow us to determine who we want to become. Human nature is so complex and beautiful at the same time, biological aspects, combined with psychological, social and -sometimes forgotten- spiritual spheres engage in what we get to experience human reality. Doctors exist, only, because of the need to alleviate and accompany patients through their suffering, which is why this historical moment (SARS CoV2 Global Pandemic) has motivated healthcare professionals and society, in general, to reflect on the essence of our vocation. This chapter seeks to try to explain our reality through the bio-psycho-social-spiritual model, analysing the spiritual component as fundamental and critical for human medical practice.
