Factors associated with the presence of depression, anxiety, and substance use in health students from 10 Latin American countries during the COVID-19 pandemic
Abstract
Introduction. Health science students represented a particularly vulnerable group during the pandemic. Studies in various regions have found a high prevalence of psychopathology, associated with the presence of stressors such as contact with patients, isolation, and financial difficulties.
Objective. To determine the stressors for and frequency of depression, anxiety and substance use in Latin American health science students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bilateral abducens and facial nerve palsies following fourth ventriculoperitoneal shunt with laparoscopic-assisted abdominal catheter placement
Abstract
Introduction: Hydrocephalus, altering cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics, affects 175 per 100,000 adults worldwide. Ventriculoperitoneal shunts (VPS) manage symptomatic hydrocephalus, with 125,000 cases annually. Despite efficacy, VPS face complications, necessitating interventions.
Research question: "What are the mechanisms and risk factors for bilateral VIth and VIIth lower motor neuron palsies in hydrocephalus patients with a fourth ventriculoperitoneal shunt?"
Postictal vertebral fractures: Incidence, risk factors, and clinical outcomes. A systematic review
Abstract
Introduction
Vertebral fractures in postictal patients with no prior acute or chronic trauma history are rare but can lead to severe neurological complications if missed during the initial evaluation.
Research question
What are the prevalence and risk factors associated with vertebral fractures? What are the characteristics of these fractures in terms of their location, severity, and clinical outcome?

Utilizing Quality of Life Adjusted Days Alive and out of Hospital in Heart Failure Clinical Trials
Abstract
BACKGROUND:
In heart failure (HF) trials, there has been an emphasis on utilizing more patient-centered outcomes, including quality of life (QoL) and days alive and out of hospital. We aimed to explore the impact of QoL adjusted days alive and out of hospital as an outcome in 2 HF clinical trials.
METHODS:
Perspectives of old-age and dementia researchers on communication with policymakers and public research funding decision-makers: an international cross-sectional survey
Abstract
Introduction
Society commonly believes that research knowledge is complementary to public decision-making. This study aimed to understand the perspectives and implications of dementia researchers communicating with policymakers and public research decision-makers (public officials).
A Novel Technique Using Lyophilized Amniotic Membrane Patch (LAMPatch) as Primary Procedure in Patients with Myopic Traction Maculopathy with Macular Detachment
Abstract
Introduction: Maculopathy secondary to pathologic myopia (PM) is increasingly causing visual impairment and blindness worldwide. PM is associated with tractional maculopathy that ranges from macular foveoschisis to macular hole. These disorders are treated with different options that offer variable results, reflecting the need for new techniques that address myopic maculopathy with consistent outcomes.
