The Anáhuac Lions and Lionesses contributed 52 medals to Mexico’s historic victory in Santo Domingo 2026

Students and graduates of the Anáhuac Elite Sports Excellence Program contributed 23 gold, 17 silver and 12 bronze medals to the 407 medals won by the Mexican delegation, which was crowned champion for the third consecutive edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Students and graduates of Anáhuac Mexico University contributed 23 gold, 17 silver and 12 bronze medals to the Mexican delegation’s record total of 407 medals at the 25th Central American and Caribbean Games.

The participation of the Anáhuac Lions and Lionesses in the games, held from July 24 to August 8, 2026, in Santo Domingo, resulted in 52 medals for Mexico as part of a historic performance by the national delegation, which finished the competition in first place in the medal count with 407 medals: 167 gold, 125 silver and 115 bronze.

The medals won by athletes and graduates of Anáhuac Mexico University, members of the Anáhuac Elite Sports Excellence Program, accounted for nearly 13% of the total medals won by our country at the sporting event.

The medals included performances in various disciplines, including artistic swimming, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing and taekwondo, among others, where the university’s representatives competed alongside other elite athletes from across the country.

Mexico, three-time champion and holder of a historic record

The result from Santo Domingo 2026 represents Mexico's best performance in the history of the Central American and Caribbean Games. The national delegation secured its third consecutive title after topping the medal count in Barranquilla 2018 and San Salvador 2023.

With 407 medals, Mexico far surpassed the 353 medals it won in San Salvador in 2023, when it obtained 145 golds, 108 silvers and 100 bronzes. It also surpassed the 341 medals won in Barranquilla in 2018, a result that allowed Mexican athletes to reclaim first place in the competition.

The difference compared to the two previous editions is significant: Santo Domingo 2026 saw an increase of 54 medals compared to San Salvador 2023 and 66 compared to Barranquilla 2018.

Mexico also set a new record in its gold rush. The 167 gold medals surpassed the 145 won in 2023, which had previously been Mexico’s best performance at the regional competition, as well as the 132 won in Barranquilla in 2018.

In fact, the new record also surpasses the performance at Mayagüez 2010, when the national delegation won 384 medals, with 133 golds, 129 silvers and 122 bronzes, setting a new all-time high for both total medals and gold medals.

The Anáhuac Lions and Lionesses: part of Mexico's sporting success

The performance of athletes from Anáhuac Mexico University continues the university's presence at major international competitions.

Prior to Santo Domingo 2026, the university had distinguished itself with the participation of more than twenty high-performance athletes in the Mexican delegation and at San Salvador 2023, 65 Anáhuac Lions and Lionesses, including current students and graduates, contributed 98 medals to Mexico’s total.

In Santo Domingo, the Anáhuac Lions and Lionesses once again represented Mexico at the highest regional level and contributed 52 medals to a delegation that finished at the top of the medal count.

The university athletes' performance adds to Mexico's historic result in a particularly significant edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games, which celebrated their 100th anniversary in 2026, with more than 6,000 athletes from 37 countries participating in competitions across 40 sports.

More than just the numbers, the participation of Anáhuac students and graduates in Santo Domingo 2026 reflects the scope of the Anáhuac Elite Sports Excellence Program, which supports the university education of athletes competing at the highest level and who, on this occasion, contributed to Mexico’s best-ever result at the regional sports competition.
