The World’s Largest Collection of Bioethics Research Material

 

Dr. Alberto García UNESCO Chair in Bioethics and Human Rights and Dr. Maria Ines Girault Coordinator of the online master’s degree in Global Bioethics.

On August 13th ,2019  They visited  the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University  where Dr. Mariel Kalkach joined them. There they got to meet with Dr. Daniel Sulmasy Director and senior research scholar and Andre Hellegers professor of Biomedical Ethics.  The Center is located in one of the oldest building on campus.

They visited the Bioethics Research Library home to the world’s largest collection of bioethics research materials.  This library provides students and scholars a diverse collection of materials on ethics, health, environment and emerging technologies.  The Institute also publish a quarterly journal “ The Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal”. The Institute latest’s innovations for the Georgetown undergraduate students is its Ethics lab. This is an initiative that combines the creativity of design and ethicists the creates a hub where students can learn ethical problem-solving solutions.

Lunch was at the neighborhood restaurant The Tomb, in a built in Federal-Style townhouse dating the mid 1800’s popular gathering place for students and preferred restaurant of Dr. Andre Hellegers,  they have a plaque on the booth he used to eat and meet with students.

Dr. Andrea Hellegers was founder and director of the Kennedy Ethics Institute 1971. Born in the Netherlands and educated in England. Came to the United States in 1953. Combining his knowledge of practical medicine and skills as a writer became known internationally  as ethicist who spoke out on bioethical problems and the moral implications of public health policy.
